Guidelines For A Smooth Installation
Test! Test! Test!
It is very important that all prior cosmetic enhancement products (Armorall®, etc) have been cleaned off the surface where the kit pieces will go. If you attempt to install the Benevento Exotic Wood Dash Kits on a surface that has not been cleaned properly, it will not stick for very long, if at all. (Test the surface with a piece of scotch tape or masking tape for good adhesion.)
*If you ignore this step you will transfer the oil or silicones to the adhesive, which will drastically reduce its holding power. The adhesive, when contaminated this way, ruins the kit part and voids the warranty.
Adhesion: Benevento kits use 3M™ 4229 adhesive material - an industry standard for automotive interior trim. Any adhesion problems are almost always due to poor prep and cleaning of vehicle surfaces (as surfaces must be entirely free of grease, skin oils, dust, dirt, cleansers and interior treatments like Armor All or other surface conditioners.) You can visit 3M's website for tips and pointers at www.3mautomotivetape.com.
The 75/95 Rule: Install Benevento Exotic Wood Dash Kits when temperatures are between 75 and 95 degrees F. Pieces in the kits should be pliable and easy to work with. The vehicle should be the same temperature. For very curved sections, warm the wood about 10 degrees more or just until pliable enough to conform to the right shape.
*Note: If a piece is too cold, it may crack during installation. If it is too hot, the wood will elongate and stretch possible causing it to crack after a couple of weeks. This type of failure is due to improper installation procedures.
Surface Preparation: Supplied with the dash kit is an adhesive promoter for difficult curved sections. Also supplied are packets of alcohol wipes. These are to be used on factory fresh cars only. They are not meant to be used to prepare the surface of a car's dash if it has been treated with Armorall® or other similar products. Be sure to read Test! Test! Test!
Try it Dry: Dry fit all parts first, especially bigger pieces that are hard to handle and position. Use masking tape to temporarily secure the pieces then carefully trim the tape between the wood and dash surface. The piece of tape will serve as a helpful guide to line up the piece during installation. If for any reason you need to reposition a piece, lift it VERY GENTLY. Do not pull aggressively. With steady upward pressure the tape may slowly release its grip, but if too much time has gone by, it will become more difficult.
Cleanup: Clean the finish only with a soft cloth like a baby diaper. The soft cotton weave won't scratch like a man made fiber. Dampen with water if needed
Maintenance: Do not use products such as Armorall® or Nu-Vinyl® on Benevento kits. We use the strongest adhesive available, but if these products come in contact with the edges of the adhesive tape, and is left there, bonding may eventually fail. Windex® or other similar cleaners work great. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth first, then gently wipe the area to be cleaned.
